How to wash pillows

Pillows are a fairly important part of our day to day – the right one can help you drift off easily and reliably, the wrong can keep you tossing and turning all night long.

They’re essential, but all too often, we can leave it too long for pillows to get washed and that can see the dirt build up – especially because we use them day in, day out. Generally, you’ll want to wash them around every six months or so, but any more than that won’t do any damage and will keep them fresher for longer.

Fortunately, washing your pillows is normally a quick and easy process, which you can do right in your home with just your everyday laundry – especially if you’ve got a washing machine like a Candy washing machine, with dedicated delicate programmes.

In this blog, we’re going to take a look at how you can do just that, with a step to step guide to washing your pillows.

A step-by-step guide to washing your pillows

  1. Check the labels on your pillow
With pillows you’ll never know if they can be machine washed or if they need to be dry cleaned.
Because of that, it’s always smart to check the labels of your pillows to be absolutely sure. It should be clear on the label how you can wash the pillows, but if it isn’t, and you want to play it safe, take them to the dry cleaners.
  2. Put the pillows into the washing machine
If your pillows are machine washable, then go ahead and put them in the washing machine – but be sure not to put anything else in with them and not to overstuff your appliance.
Doing so can cause damage both to the pillows and even to the machine itself so you want to be sure you can close the door easily enough and that it can lock.
  3. Add laundry detergent
We’d recommend going for gentler laundry detergent – the kind you can buy for more delicate garments like those made of silk and wool. This is best to ensure you don’t cause your pillows to shrink or stretch in the wash.
  4. Run the washing machine on a gentle cycle
If you have a delicate cycle on your washing machine – like those you can find on Candy appliances – run the pillow wash on this with hot water.
Doing so will protect your pillows, keeping them in good shape for the future and preventing them from losing any firmness when you put them back in your bed.
  5. Dry the pillows
You have two options for drying your pillows once they’ve been washed – you can either let them hang dry or you can put them in the dryer.
If you want to let them hang dry, or you don’t have access to a dryer, you’ll want to hang them out. Ideally, you’ll pick a warm, sunny day to hang them out on the line outside – but if you can’t, then make sure you put them somewhere in direct sunlight, near a window.
If you want to run them through the dryer, choose a low heat to protect the fibers of your pillows. Place two or three tennis balls in the dryer with your pillows, ideally in a pair of clean socks to stop their fuzz getting on everything. The tennis balls will bounce off the pillows, removing any clumps inside them.
