The energy label: what is it and what does it mean?

The energy label gives information about the energy consumption of an electrical appliance so that consumers can decide what model is best to buy. Energy labels are currently a legal requirement in all EU countries. This information is required for most mains-powered electrical appliances (ovens, washing machines, fridge freezers, dishwashers, televisions, etc.) and must also be displayed by sellers for appliances bought online. Let’s look in more detail at the information on energy labels and how to interpret it correctly.

The energy label: where is it and what does it mean?

Under European regulations, the energy label must be clearly shown on the electrical appliance. The following information is given on an energy label:

  • Manufacturer’s brand and model;
  • Energy class;
  • Consumption in kW (kilowatt);
  • Energy consumption for typical functions of the appliance (e.g. spin for washing machines);
  • Further specific technical details shown in symbols and pictograms (load capacity, water consumption, noise levels, etc.).

Energy classes for electrical appliances

Energy classes are divided into 7 levels, the values of which are expressed as letters from A to G; this is reinforced on the label by the use of colours on the arrows, where green represents maximum efficiency, while red indicates the worst performance level.

The classes offering the best savings are classes A +++, A++ and A+ but not all appliances (for example, ovens) can achieve class A+++ for technical reasons. Within class A+++ there is a further classification showing additional energy savings made by an A+++ appliance compared to other appliances in the same class (for example A+++ -20%).

The EU has defined minimum energy efficiency standards for appliances that can be put on the market:

  • A for washing machines with a load capacity of more than 3 kg
  • A+ for fridges and freezers
  • A for dishwashers

To choose the best appliance for your home, whether a dishwasher or new cooker hood, you need to study the energy label carefully. Read the consumption levels presented carefully and relate them to the purchase cost. Remember that buying the latest model with high energy efficiency can make a substantial difference to your electricity and water bills.
